About this course:

Couple therapists face more ethical challenges than individually oriented therapists. While the focus of individual therapy is solely on the individual, couples therapy shifts the focus from any one individual to the unit. This broader perspective of couples therapy is based on the fundamental principles of the Systems Theory which considers any dysfunction in an individual’s behaviour to be a symptom of the larger dynamics operating within the group.

  1. Firstly, the ethical considerations and ethical challenges of couples therapy will be discussed.
  2. Secondly, a brief summary of the CBT Theory will be provided.
  3. Thirdly, the following aspects of “Getting past the affair” will be elaborated on namely:
  • How do we stop harming each other? (What is happening to us, how do we talk to each other, how do we talk to others and children)
  • How did this happen to us? (Why did this happen, who is to blame, my role, why did I not notice?)
  • Can this relationship be saved? (How do we survive this, is it too late, how do we continue or end the relationship).

This online course will provide strategies for helping clients overcome the initial outrage, identify what happened and why, think clearly about their best interests before they act, and recover emotionally, whether or not they reconcile.
