Many therapists are filled with anxiety and dread when working with clients who present with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). These clients can evoke powerful emotions in therapists and these difficulties will play out in the therapeutic relationship, impacting on its efficacy. In this webinar we will look at: Understanding how clients develop BPD through trauma and attachment difficulties can heighten clinicians empathy with their pain. The factors that are central to an accurate diagnosis being made; Then, how to identify the elements causing the greatest distress and disruption in the client’ life and adopting a particular therapeutic stance and skills to assist them.

Vanessa Hemp

Vanessa Hemp is a Clinical Psychologist who trained at Wits University. She worked at Tara Hospital with children, adolescents and their parents, on an outpatient basis.  She then became head of the psychology department, managing and supervising the psychological service provision throughout the hospital, including the outpatient and outreach services at Alexandra Clinic. Since leaving the hospital, Vanessa has been in private practice, focusing on adolescents, individual adult therapy and parenting. She continues to present at conferences on topics relating to children, adolescence and parenting. Addressing issues of affect regulation and assisting children, teens and their parents to manage stressful situations and overwhelming feelings has been a major focus of her work.
